While climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, there is almost a rule to drink at least 3 litres of water daily. On higher altitudes, this feels like torture. Most people wouldn’t want to drink as much water because water is tasteless and in some cases, they don’t want frequent bathroom breaks during the walk or even worse at night. However, we are always told to drink water even though it may feel uncomfortable. Drinking water during mountain climbing is essential for several reasons:

  1. Hydration: Water is essential for maintaining proper hydration, which is crucial for physical performance and preventing altitude sickness.
  2. Temperature regulation: Water helps to regulate body temperature and prevent overheating during intense physical activity.
  3. Performance: Dehydration can lead to fatigue, muscle cramps, and decreased mental performance, which can negatively impact climbing performance.
  4. Safety: Adequate hydration is vital for maintaining healthy blood flow, which is necessary for adequately functioning the heart and brain. This can be especially important in high-altitude environments with less oxygen available.
  5. Recovery: Drinking water can aid recovery after a climb by helping to flush out toxins, replenish fluids lost through sweating, and promote healing of any minor injuries.

We are therefore strongly advised to keep ourselves hydrated during climb drinking at least 3 litres but if possible drink more to ensure you’re fully hydrated. A vital note/consideration is to sip the water frequently (every 10 minutes) instead of gulping a litre or half a litre in one go.
